A Linn Ware ashtray, confirmed by the impressed "LW" mark on the base — the historic South African pottery tracing back to Olifantsfontein, founded by potters trained at the Ceramic Studio and later backed by Sir Thomas Cullinan.

A cream/oatmeal glaze with a rust-brown drip trim, in the studio's characteristic understated palette.

Backstory

Linn Ware traces back to Olifantsfontein, between Pretoria and Johannesburg, where mining magnate Sir Thomas Cullinan first backed ceramic production in the early 1900s — the same patronage pattern that shows up again and again in South Africa's early studio pottery history.

This ashtray, in the studio's cream glaze with a rust-brown drip trim, is marked with the impressed "LW" that confirms exactly where it came from — a small, honest piece of a genuinely important chapter in South African design.
