A companion piece to our "Zulu Woman" plaque — hand-painted by France Marot, Chief Designer of Drostdy Ware (a division of Grahamstown Pottery, active in the 1950s), and part of the same academically documented series of African figure studies produced by the studio.

Elegant Art Deco-influenced line work in black over a sage-green ground, depicting an "Ndebele Woman" in profile. Hand-signed on the reverse: "France Marot, Hand Painted, Ndebele Woman, Drostdy Ware, Made in South Africa."

Very good condition with no chips or cracks.

Backstory

Within Drostdy Ware's studio, design work was genuinely divided by subject: France Marot's own specialism was what the pottery termed "native studies" — figure studies of African subjects, like this one — and indigenous flora, while wildlife imagery was handled separately by another artist, Hans Kumpf.

This hand-signed, titled "Ndebele Woman" plaque is part of the same named, numbered series as our companion "Zulu Woman" piece — both reflecting the elegant, Art Deco-influenced line style Marot applied to South African subject matter, a genre now studied academically rather than left to collector guesswork.
