A Linn Ware ashtray, confirmed by the impressed "LW" mark on the base — the historic South African pottery tracing back to Olifantsfontein, founded by potters trained at the Ceramic Studio and later backed by Sir Thomas Cullinan.

A streaky brown and rust drip glaze over a cream ground, showcasing the studio's characteristic reactive glazework — no two pieces glaze quite the same way.

Backstory

In 1925, two potters trained at the Durban School of Art, Gladys Short and Marjorie Johnstone, founded what became Linn Ware's original studio — a genuinely rare opportunity for women in South African ceramics at the time, and one of the country's first serious studio pottery ventures.

This ashtray's streaky brown and rust drip glaze over cream shows the studio's reactive glazework at its most individual — no two pieces ever came out of the kiln quite the same.
