The Real Environmental Case for Buying Vintage

We talk a lot on this journal about design history — makers, designers, the stories behind pieces. But there's a simpler reason to buy vintage furniture that's worth spelling out plainly: the environmental math genuinely favours it, and by a wide margin.

Start with what furniture actually costs the planet. Almost all of a piece's environmental footprint is paid upfront, during manufacturing and transport — furniture doesn't burn electricity or emit anything while you're simply using it day to day. That means every new piece manufactured represents a fresh, full hit of emissions and resource use, before it's even left the factory. A vintage piece, by contrast, already paid that cost decades ago. Buying it secondhand adds essentially nothing to that original footprint — you're just extending the life of an emissions cost that's already been spent.

Now look at where new furniture actually ends up. In the United States alone, discarded furniture and furnishings have grown from around 2 million tons a year in 1960 to more than 12 million tons today — a rate of growth that far outpaces population growth over the same period. Roughly 80% of that ends up in landfill. The picture isn't better elsewhere: the European Union generates close to 11 million tons of furniture waste annually, and the UK alone discards an estimated 670,000 tons — around 22 million individual pieces — recycling only about 17% of it.

The reason so little gets recycled is structural, not just a lack of effort. Modern "fast furniture" is typically built from particleboard and MDF bonded with resin adhesives — cheap to produce, but effectively impossible to recycle, since no mill will accept resin-saturated chips as feedstock. Those same boards continue off-gassing formaldehyde for months or years after manufacture. When that furniture eventually breaks down in landfill, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas roughly 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a hundred-year period.

Vintage furniture sidesteps almost all of this. The pieces that have survived 50 or 60 years — solid teak, oak, elm, steel, real joinery rather than glue and particleboard — survived precisely because they were built to be repaired and passed on, not replaced. Buying one doesn't just avoid a fresh round of manufacturing emissions; it keeps a genuinely well-made object out of landfill for another few decades, doing the job it was always designed to do.

It's the same principle behind everything else we do here: clean and restore rather than replace, disclose honestly rather than oversell, and treat a well-made piece as something worth keeping in circulation. It turns out that approach is also, quite simply, the more responsible one — not as a marketing angle, but as basic arithmetic.
